Happy Howleen!

As a child that grew up trick or treating in the late 80s/90s, Halloween holds a very special place in my heart. From knowing what house had the BEST candy (Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups for the WIN!) to avoiding the one house that gave out toothbrushes – like really, buzz kill much?

Keeping our pets safe should be something to keep on your mind while handing out treats to little goblins and ghosts. Here is a list of some quick tips to help keep your pup safe this evening:

  1. Avoid having your dog eat any candy. We all know that chocolate and dogs do not mix, but did you know some peanut butter products contain xylitol? Xylitol is life threatening when consumed by dogs.
  2. Leave your dog at home if you’re heading to trick or treat. The crowds, the different costumes, people that are not knowledgeable about approaching or petting a strange dog can spell disaster.
  3. If you’ll be home with your dog and you know he/she is reactive to the doorbell, consider greeting trick or treaters with outside.
  4. If you’re in training and working on thresholds (including door bolting) be sure to be consistent with the training and patient while waiting to greet trick or treaters. They can also learn patience as well J
  5. Make sure your dog has on his collar with tags along with a leash or harness in case of escape.
  6. If you haven’t put a costume on your pup yet, do not do it this evening. It will create unnecessary stress for a few moments of a laugh by humans. This can be a goal for 2017!

If you ever need dog training in Durham, dog training in Raleigh or Brier Creek, be sure to give us a shout and we’d be happy to help you.

Have a happy and safe Halloween from my family to yours.
